From the liner notes:
Jazz legend Duke Ellington composed the music and Paul Francis Webster wrote the lyrics for “I Got it Bad, and That Ain’t Good” for the 1941 musical revue Jump for Joy. With an all African-American cast, frank discussions of racial inequality and nuanced, non-stereotypical representations of African American life and characters, the musical generated controversy in its day but was also a critical success. It began its stage run at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles and Ellington’s intention was always to bring it to Broadway, but the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entry into World War II put those dreams to an end.
Even though “I Got it Bad, and That Ain’t Good” never made it to Broadway, it has made it into the annals of jazz classics. We decided to include this version by the late jazz singer Maxine Sullivan as a representative of one of the greatest musicals, that, due to circumstances, never made it to “The Great White Way.” While that nickname for Broadway comes from the bright theater marquees that lighten up the night sky, it’s an ironic metaphor for the long struggle of African-American actors, producers and directors to get fair representation on Broadway stages.
