This video is part of the 'How does it feel for me?' video programme, following the journeys of people through health and care. This video shares Diane’s recent experience having a routine diabetic eye exam at St James’s. During the appointment, Diane was diagnosed with cataracts and told she would need surgery. However, no interpreter was present, meaning Diane was not fully informed about what this diagnosis meant or the next steps. This left both Diane and Gemma feeling stressed.
Gemma explains that the experience has damaged her trust in the service. Diane feels let down by the experience.
Both highlight how important it is to have an interpreter present so that people are properly informed about their health and care, and the different communication options available.
