Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a Scottish Gaelic folk song I wanted to arrange in a modern harmonised form. Gaelic folk songs are often constructed using pentatonic melodic structures, and whilst they were historically modal and monophonic traditions, the implementation of tonal harmony means these pentatonic melodies are now often combined with chords, or as in the case of choral traditions, polyphonic harmonisation, which is what I did here.
Regarding the pronunciation, please note that Scottish Gaelic is not a standardised language and has a great variety of accents and dialects. The one I used is based on this recording: • tha mi sgith w lyrics
Scottish Gaelic:
Tha mi sgìth 's mi leam fhìn,
Buain na rainich, buain na rainich,
Tha mi sgìth 's mi leam fhìn,
Buain na rainich daonnan
Cùl an tomain, bràigh an tomain,
Cùl an tomain bhòidheach,
Cùl an tomain, bràigh an tomain,
H-uile là nam ònar.
English translation:
I am tired and I am alone,
Cutting the bracken, cutting the bracken,
I am tired and I am alone,
Forever cutting the bracken
Behind the knoll, the top of the knoll,
Behind the lovely knoll,
Behind the knoll, the top of the knoll,
Every day, alone.
