Host: Cosmetic Procedures are more popular than ever. We’re also learning more about the power of stem cells to advance medicine, or whatever happens when we combine the two. I’ll tell you who’s gonna help us – Dr. Ben Johnson of Innovations Medical, is gonna tell us about this exciting new combination. You’ve come on to talk about stem cells, cosmetic surgeries, and how they’re combined – the two, together. This is the first time we’ve talked about this.

Dr. J: It is! It’s the first time we’ve talked about this. We’ve been talking about cosmetics for about ten years here on Good Morning Texas, and for stem cells almost five. But we’ve finally learned enough that we can start talking about what happens when we combine the two and when you understand that most of our healing is done by stem cells, it really makes sense. We get the fat from you, there are no side effects, so it is an easy process.

Host: Alright, and I think we can start small then. What is a stem cell?

Dr. J: A stem cell has two important features that make it special. It can multiply and become more cells, and it can multiply and become another cell. So when we use this picture of when you cut your finger to kind of illustrate, the damaged cells release special chemicals called growth factors. Those call in cells to clean up the damage and then they call in stem cells to heal and repair the tissue. So, all that repair is done by stem cells and that’s pretty much for any of our healing and they are the healing cells in our body.

Host: I noticed that the little animation had a finger displayed, is that where we’re getting our stem cells from? Where is Innovations getting the stem cells from?

Dr. J: We get stem cells from your fat. We typically get around your waist, okay. We numb your area about this big, and then we get about a thumb’s worth of fat, okay. And then we take that, and process it for a couple of hours and we typically collect about fifty and a hundred million stem cells.

Host: Wow! All from a thumb’s worth of fat?

Dr. J: From a thumb’s worth of fat.

Host: That’s a lot! How do you use the stem cells?

Dr. J: The stem cells, for cosmetic use, has been mostly done on the face. One of the best studied is combining it with carbon dioxide laser which punches hundreds of tiny holes in the face and when we do that, we just paint the cells on. It doesn’t even require any action. It really approves the healing time, it really improves the response, we can also mix the stem cells in with fat when transferring it to the face and not only does that improve the revival of the cells, it also helps improve the texture and color of the overlying skin.

Host: By adding fat?

Dr. J: By adding fat. But, one of the coolest things that have been done on the face the most is we actually just inject the stem cells directly and that’s been referred to as a stem cell face lift. It doesn’t do everything that a face lift does but it does tighten the skin and it does help with the texture and color.

Host: This is so interesting! This is the first time we’re talking about it! I’m just in awe right now! My jaw’s on the floor. Can we use it anywhere else other than on the face?

Dr. J: It’s been used some off-face too if we can use it with fat transfer.
