The citadel in the shape of a six-pointed star was built according to a project created by the French engineer J.G. Lambert. Six curtains are connected by six powerful bastions named after the associates of Peter I. Three hundred guns are installed on the ramparts. In 1712-1732, the Peter and Paul Cathedral was erected.
