In this video we take a walk through the entire territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia. We will also walk along the ice of the frozen Neva River and look at the Peter and Paul Fortress and bastions from the water. In the Peter and Paul Fortress on Cathedral Square, we will listen to fragments of carillon music.
/// Carillon is a musical instrument that makes bells play melodies with the help of a clock mechanism.
/// Peter and Paul Fortress was founded by Peter I on May 27, 1703. The basis of the architectural ensemble of the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The cathedral contains the tombs of all Russian emperors. Peter I himself chose the place for the new fortress - a small Hare Island. The citadel in the shape of a six-pointed star was built according to a project created by the French engineer J.G. Lambert. Six curtains are connected by six powerful bastions named after the associates of Peter I. Three hundred guns are installed on the ramparts. In 1712-1732, the Peter and Paul Cathedral was erected. During the 18-19th centuries, the following were built on the territory of the fortress: the Botny house, the Artillery tseikhhauz, the Mint and others. In the 19th century, the Peter and Paul Fortress became the main political prison in Russia, where political prisoners were kept. In the Botny House there is a copy of the first ship that gave rise to the Russian fleet.
