In economics, “rents” are benefits created by the government. Professor Michael Munger explains that the definition of “rent-seeking” is the competition for government benefits (such as subsidies) by special interest groups or businesses. He argues that rent seeking is harmful for society. Dr. Michael Munger is a Professor of Political Science at Duke University, and Director of the PPE Certificate Program.
