I returned to the Dungeness Spit Trail to finish what papa and I started last year.
This time, I made it all the way to the lighthouse!
Dungeness Spit, located on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, is one of the longest natural sand spits in the United States, stretching over five miles into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Formed by glacial sediment and shaped by powerful coastal currents, the spit is constantly changing — a narrow ribbon of land surrounded by water on both sides.
At the very end stands the New Dungeness Lighthouse, built in 1857 to guide ships through the strait after numerous shipwrecks. It’s one of the oldest lighthouses on the West Coast and still stands as a quiet landmark at the edge of the continent.
We hiked this trail last year but turned back before reaching the lighthouse. This time, I came back solo to complete the journey. Most PAPIA Adventures are shared with Papa, but this hike was about moving alone, taking it slow, and finishing unfinished business.
Thanks for joining me on this adventure.
