REAL REASON Why There's No Bridge Between Scotland And Ireland
For over 150 years, engineers have tried to connect Scotland and Ireland. Every single attempt has failed. But not because it's too expensive or too difficult to build — because of what's hiding at the bottom of the sea.
Between Scotland and Northern Ireland lies Beaufort's Dyke, a 50km underwater trench containing over 1 MILLION TONNES of dumped munitions — the largest underwater weapons graveyard in the world. Phosgene rockets, mustard gas shells, and even radioactive waste were secretly dumped here from the 1920s until 1976.
In 1995, the sea started giving it back. Thousands of phosphorus bombs washed up on Scottish beaches, and a 4-year-old boy was burned at Campbeltown. The government had denied the dumping for 13 years — until the truth finally came out.
When Boris Johnson proposed his £20 billion "Celtic Crossing" in 2018, he dismissed the weapons dump as a non-issue. The 2021 Hendy Review proved him wrong: £335 billion, 30 years to build, and "impossible to justify."
The ferries will remain. Some secrets the sea keeps forever.
