BACKSTORY:
A year after the short-lived Just Friends (1979), Stockard Channing returned to CBS with another sitcom, The Stockard Channing Show. Although the two series had different character names and settings, they shared nearly identical premises—and even reused the same home set—leading Channing to describe them as two seasons of the same show in interviews.

In The Stockard Channing Show, Channing stars as Susan Goodenow, a recent divorcee who lands a job as a consumer reporter for the Los Angeles TV show The Big Rip-Off. Her eccentric neighbor and best friend, Earline Cunningham (Sydney Goldsmith), helps her secure the job. Susan’s new colleague is Brad Gabriel (Ron Silver), a tightly-wound journalist obsessed with uncovering consumer fraud.

The series aired on CBS from March 24 to July 12, 1980, running for 13 episodes. It occupied the Monday 8:30 P.M. ET timeslot alongside popular shows like WKRP in Cincinnati, MASH*, and Flo.
