Graduation 2023 | Dr Phil Cowburn MBE Honorary Speech | University of Gloucestershire

We are honoured to have Dr. Philip Cowburn MBE, a distinguished figure in the field of emergency medicine, deliver a special address at our graduation ceremony this year.

As a consultant in Emergency Medicine at Bristol Royal Infirmary and North Bristol NHS Trust, and a key founding member of the Great Western Air Ambulance, Dr. Cowburn has made significant contributions to critical care and emergency response. His ongoing involvement in delivering critical care via helicopter and response car is a testament to his commitment and expertise in life-saving medical interventions.

In his current role as the Acute Care Medical Director for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Dr. Cowburn continues to lead and innovate in emergency medical services. His advisory roles with regional police specialist units and as a civilian ambassador advisor to the UK military prehospital care board further demonstrate his wide-ranging impact and dedication.

In 2021, Dr. Cowburn was awarded an MBE for his crucial work on the Nightingale Hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. The University is proud to confer upon him an Honorary Fellowship, recognising his outstanding career in emergency medicine and his invaluable contribution to our Paramedic Science programme. His influence has been profoundly inspirational for both students and staff.
