Learning math outdoors provides children with a holistic understanding of mathematical concepts by engaging their senses and connecting abstract ideas to real-world experiences.

In an outdoor environment, children can explore mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, such as measuring distances with natural objects, counting objects in their surroundings, and observing patterns in nature.

Today we created a Number Path by tying twine to two trees. The children then figured out how to order the numbers 1-10 with equal space between them.

This was a collaborative group effort to develop number sense and spatial reasoning, practice counting, and understand number relationships.

A holistic math approach fosters a deeper understanding of math by encouraging curiosity, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking, while also promoting physical activity and a connection to the natural world.

This is essential for children’s overall development.
