Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett (1946–2006) was an English singer, guitarist, songwriter, and visual artist from Cambridge. He co founded Pink Floyd and was the band’s original creative force, shaping their early psychedelic sound
He wrote much of their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), considered a cornerstone of psychedelic rock. Syd is known for surreal, whimsical, and deeply original songwriting, influencing generations of musicians.
By 1967–68, Barrett began struggling with severe mental health issues, which made performing and recording increasingly difficult. During the making of Pink Floyd’s second album, the band could no longer work with him, and he eventually left the group.
He released two cult favorite solo albums (The Madcap Laughs and Barrett).
Syd withdrew from public life in the mid 1970s. He spent his later decades living quietly in Cambridge, painting and gardening until his death in 2006.
Even though his career was short, Barrett’s influence on psychedelic and alternative music is enormous. Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here is largely a tribute to him.
