The actor Hugh Grant once said the business model for social media seems to be to “monetize unkindness.” The High Holy Days of the Jewish Calendar are a time to seek and give forgiveness. To review our lives to see if there is anything we have said or done to someone else that was unkind. To consider the possibility of forgiving others for their unkindnesses. But how effective can religious rituals for reconciliation be in a society that monetizes unkindness?
