Arthur Okonkwo, a 23-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper and former Arsenal academy star, has secured a league-leading 17 clean sheets in English League One this season, highlighted by a 0-0 draw against Wigan Athletic.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo’s stellar performances have positioned him as a prime candidate for a Super Eagles call-up.
Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, has taken notice and plans to meet Okonkwo during the Super Eagles’ four-team invitational tournament in England.
Okonkwo, who joined Wrexham permanently after loans at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, has conceded just 25 goals in 33 games, with 21 in 29 league matches, showcasing his reliability for the promotion-chasing side.
Eligible for both Nigeria and England, he has represented England at youth levels (U16, U17, U18) but remains uncapped at senior level, leaving the door open for Nigeria. His 6’6” frame, inspired by Petr Cech and David De Gea, aids his commanding presence.
Okonkwo’s potential Super Eagles debut could align with Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualifiers, as Chelle aims to bolster the squad with talents like Okonkwo, who is also mentoring young Arsenal goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo, his brother.
