Public Outrage Grows After LBC Host Attacks Prince William and Backs a Republic

LBC presenter Lewis Goodall has sparked fresh controversy after openly questioning Prince William’s image as a “modern” royal and calling for Britain to move toward a republic.
Speaking on The News Agents podcast alongside Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel, the discussion focused on what the monarchy could look like under a future King William — and whether it still fits modern Britain.
While Jon Sopel suggested Prince William’s reign could lead to a slimmer, more Scandinavian-style monarchy, Lewis Goodall strongly disagreed. He argued that royal tours in Africa and the Caribbean still carried colonial imagery and challenged the idea that the Prince and Princess of Wales represent real modernity.
Goodall also raised concerns about the vast royal estates and questioned whether meaningful change is possible within the system itself. He went further by expressing sympathy for Prince George, describing royal life as a “gilded prison” and questioning whether future generations should inherit that burden at all.
The comments triggered strong reactions online, with some supporting reform and others agreeing that the monarchy should be abolished entirely.
