“I don’t really care about it”: Trump on renewing US-Canada-Mexico trade deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has cast doubt on the potential renewal of the longstanding free trade pact between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico (CUSMA).
The deal – known as USMCA to Americans – is set to expire in July, with a mandatory review set to begin mid-January.
During a visit to a Ford manufacturing plant in Dearborn, Mich. on Tuesday, Trump said there was “no real advantage” for the U.S. if the deal was renewed, noting that he doesn’t “really care about it.”
The Republican president told reporters that “Canada wants it” but the United States doesn’t need anything from its northern neighbour. “I don’t even think about USMCA,” he added.
CUSMA has shielded Canada and Mexico from the worst impacts of Trump’s tariffs. The president increased duties on Canada to 35 per cent last August, citing the flow of deadly fentanyl, but those tariffs do not apply to goods compliant with the trade pact.
