The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in collaboration with New Bedford Ocean Explorium, invites you to explore the deep sea with a movie for spherical display systems - "Smoke and Fire Underwater." Did you know that there are volcanoes in the deep sea with vents that can spew hot water over 750 degrees F? Did you know that life can survive, even thrive, near such extreme environments? The movie interweaves imagery obtained with deep-sea vehicles with global datasets, including a new dataset locating the world's known deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Our storyline addresses Earth science and ocean literacy principles.

Funding for the Global Viewport to Deep-Sea Vents was provided by NSF #1202977 to S. Beaulieu (WHOI) and A. Spargo (Ocean Explorium).
