„Immer nur Lächeln“ - der chinesische Prinz Sou-Chong ist gefangen in seiner traditionellen Hofetikette. Er hat sich bei einer Europareise in Wien in die schöne Lisa verliebt und sie mit in seine Heimat genommen. Doch ihr gemeinsames Glück wird getrübt, als der Prinz nach altem Brauch vier Mandschu-Mädchen heiratet. Lisa beschließt, mit ihrem alten Freund Gustl aus dem Palast zu fliehen. Als Sou-Chong erkennt, dass die Liebe die so verschiedenartigen kulturellen Konventionen nicht überwinden kann, lässt er sie ziehen. Die Titelpartie in Lehárs „Land des Lächelns“ war eine Paraderolle des legendären Tenors Richard Tauber, der die Arie „Dein ist mein ganzes Herz“ durch seine Auftritte, Schallplatten und Verfilmungen zum Welthit machte.
