Prestonpans station was opened in 1846 by the North British Railway, serving the aforementioned town as well as nearby Cockenzie and Port Seton. It sits on the modern East Coast Main Line that runs out of Edinburgh Waverley, through northeast England, down towards London Kings Cross.
The line through the station was electrified in 1991, as part of the final stages of the East Coast Main Line electrification which had begun back in the mid-1970s. The station is served by an hourly service between Edinburgh Waverley and North Berwick throughout the day.
