We've had a Doom series retrospective, we've talked about how Doom is scary, we've dealt with the “nightmarish” difficulty of Doom 3, but there's more. In 1997, id Software published the Doom source code and that was the beginning of the development of a mass of source ports. Perhaps the most influential of these is GZDoom. It was used to create Brutal Doom, hundreds of wads, total conversions and dozens of full games. It's time to tell you how GZDoom changed the Doom community, created a new generation of game designers and what boomer-shooters have to do with it.
