일제 강점기, 독립을 외치며 항일 만세 운동에 나섰던 여성 독립지사 유관순, 심명철, 어윤희, 권애라, 신관빈, 임명애, 김향화 등은 서대문 형무소 여옥사 8호실에 투옥되었습니다. 그들은 옥중에서도 서로를 격려하며 노래를 지어 불렀습니다. 오늘날 그 선율은 전해지지 않지만, 심명철 지사가 생전에 아들에게 전한 「대한이 살았다」와 「선죽교 피다리」의 가사만이 남아 있습니다.

이러한 역사적 사실에서 영감받아, 투옥된 여성들이 함께 불렀던 노래를 바탕으로 여성 합창곡 「서사가 女 8호실」을 새롭게 창작하였습니다. 또한, 독립에 대한 간절한 희망을 담아 새롭게 작곡한 「그날이 오면」과, 당시 여성 독립지사들이 자주 불렀던 「구조 아리랑을 곡에 더했습니다.

더불어, 문화강국을 꿈꾸었던 민족의 어버이 백범 김구 선생을 기리며 「백범(종로) 애국가」를 작곡하였고, 곡의 마지막에는 그녀들이 투옥된 계기이자 정신의 근원인 '독립 만세 운동'을 노래로 표현하였습니다.

이 곡은 유관순 열사를 비롯한 여성 독립지사들이 꿈꾸었던 대한의 독립과 번영을 담았으며, 여성의 몸으로 조국 독립을 위해 헌신한 모든 분과 그 뜻을 함께하고자 종로구립합창단이 여성 합창으로 녹음하였습니다.

이 음악은 서대문 형무소 여옥사 8호실에 갇혔던 독립지사들과,대한독립을 위해 몸을 바친 모든 이에게 헌정합니다.

Epic Song “Women’s Prison Cell 8”

During the Japanese colonial period, courageous women who participated in the Korean independence movement—such as Yu Gwan-sun, Sim Myeong-cheol, Eo Yun-hui, Kwon Ae-ra, Shin Gwan-bin, Im Myeong-ae, and Kim Hyang-hwa—were imprisoned together in Cell 8 of Seodaemun Prison. Even in the depths of confinement, they uplifted one another through song. Though the original melody has been lost to time, only the lyrics of “Seonjukgyo Bridge Pidari” remain, preserved through the recollection of Governor Shim Myeong-cheol, who passed them on to his son with the words: “Daehan lived.”

Inspired by this powerful legacy, the new women’s choral work “Cell 8” reimagines the spirit of the songs those imprisoned women once sang together. To honor their resilience and hope, the composition weaves in two additional pieces: “When the Day Comes”, an original song expressing their earnest yearning for independence, and “Gujo Arirang”, a version of the folk song frequently sung by female independence activists of the era.

In tribute to Baekbeom Kim Gu—a national leader who dreamed of a culturally strong and independent Korea—the work also incorporates the “Baekbeom (Jongno) National Anthem”. The piece culminates with the cry of “Long Live the Independence Movement!”, echoing both the moment of their imprisonment and the enduring source of their indomitable spirit.

This choral work embodies the vision of a free and prosperous Korea, as dreamed by female independence fighters like the martyred Yu Gwan-sun. It was recorded by the Jongno City Choir as a women’s ensemble, standing in solidarity with all who sacrificed as women for the cause of Korean independence.

Dedicated to the independence activists imprisoned in Seodaemun Prison’s Historic Cell 8—and to all who gave their lives for Korea’s freedom.
