Are Synthetic Luminance Images Really Useful?

Making and using synthetic luminance images to denoise and improve astrophotography is a long-standing technique. But it is a flawed technique, based on the notion one can get something for nothing. The reality is it adds needless inefficiency and complexity to the development workflow and offers nothing in return.
