The Damodar River originates from the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Jharkhand, near Chandwa/Chulhapani, flows southeast through Jharkhand and West Bengal, historically known as the "Sorrow of Bengal" for floods, and finally empties into the Hooghly River near Kolkata, a major tributary of the Ganges. Its basin is vital for India's coal and power, managed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).
