I have listed many of the tools and products I've used in the video series here: http://a.co/aUOPxJ3 I Show You Marine Epoxy Resin Coating on the inside Hull of the Small Wooden Boat Build Video #21 I use an epoxy glue like system for marine applications on the interior of my boat, to help seal the boat from water. instead of 1 layer or fiberglass and epoxy resin on the inside and outside, I figured I would put some clear epoxy resin on the inside of the boat mixed with wood flour, to make what's known as peanut butter.
This heavy mix of wood flour (very fine saw dust) and 2 part, epoxy resin glue (a clear resin mix, with a slight amber tint) was used to coat liberally on the inside of the hull. About a 16th an inch thick. I thought about placing fiberglass inside too, but decided not to do that on this build. I have seen plenty boat builders do this, but I'm pressed for time presently. The liberal brushing of the epoxy resin seems to be working out really well. I do not foresee this cracking at all to be honest.
I had thought about buying some west systems epoxy for my boat, but know that this was an expensive route to take, so purchased the most financially viable option. I bought some other bits and pieces, and it still cost about $150 for a 2 gallon kit. After coating 75% of one side of the interior hull, I have only used a very small portion of the epoxy resin, I might only need to buy a small container, once i get started on the outside of the hull, when I fiberglass the hull.
I have a feeling the slight tint in the epoxy resin will make the mahogany look amazing when I finally coat everything. I am looking forward to this procedure, but will be quite nervous to do it. I've decided to fiberglass the hull by myself, as i want to say that I did everything myself on the boat. (this time around)
I mixed the resin 1:1 ratio and mixed in wood flour (about 14 small spatula scoops worth) mixing slowly, but thoroughly, so not to create plumes of dust in the air. I stirred well from the bottom of the cup and sides to make sure all the epoxy resin was completely incorporated.
My next fear was working time, but discovered I had over an hour to work with the epoxy and up to 4 hours, before i had to worry about adding another coat (as it was still quite tacky at after this time) I'm overjoyed at the end result.
It cures after 36 hours and look forward to seeing how it all looks and feels after this amount of time. Obviously the epoxy resin on the outside will be used with no wood flour or other additive, when coating the fiberglass matting I'll soon be purchasing.
I still have to build the trailer to deploy the boat into the water from the boat ramps. She's already going to be too heavy to carry myself I'm sure. Especially with 2 deep cycle marine batteries below deck.
And before any of this can happen, I still need to take my boating license tests and get any licenses required to make it all legal.
