Cough Syrup Crackdown: Govt Makes Lab Testing Mandatory After Child Deaths

After multiple child deaths linked to contaminated cough syrups, the Indian government has taken a major step.
From now on, all cough syrups sold in India must undergo mandatory testing in government or approved laboratories, a rule earlier meant only for exports.

Pharma companies must obtain a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) before any batch hits the market. The move targets syrups containing toxic chemicals like DEG (Diethylene Glycol) and EG (Ethylene Glycol), substances blamed for past tragedies.

The Centre has also marked 10 chemicals as high-risk and launched a nationwide digital monitoring system (ONDLS) to track solvent supply chains from factory to pharmacy.

This decision follows several child deaths in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, triggering strict inspections and seizures. Authorities are cracking down, and some companies have even halted production or surrendered licenses.
