Shipwrecked European Robinson Crusoe (O’Toole) lives rigidly alone on a remote island, clinging to the values and structures of “civilized” Western society. His world changes when he encounters Friday (Roundtree), a free-spirited Indigenous man whose approach to life challenges every belief Crusoe holds.

Rather than the traditional story where Friday becomes Crusoe’s obedient servant, this version presents something radical for 1975:
Friday is the moral center, and Crusoe’s worldview is exposed as violent, insecure, and unsustainable.

The interactions between Roundtree and O’Toole spark a thought-provoking examination of race, power, and humanity — decades ahead of its time.
