After the defeat of the Axis powers in World War II, Eritrea entered a decade of British administration. That was the 1940s. The 1950s saw a brief federation with Ethiopia. Then came the 1960s — the era of revolution. That revolution turned into a full-blown war for independence in the 1970s, and Eritreans paid dearly in the 1980s. At last, in the 1990s, Eritrea became independent. But the 2000s brought a bitter irony: a liberated people began to suffer under a native tyranny. By the 2010s and 2020s, Eritreans were fleeing—from repression, from hopelessness, from the very nation they fought to free.
This, in a nutshell, is our tragic journey. Each decade opened with promise, only to close with betrayal. What’s next?
