What is the “Initiation Well”
The Initiation Well is an impressive underground structure located in the gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, in Sintra.
Although it is called a “well,” it never served as a source of water. Instead, it has a symbolic and ceremonial character.
History and Who Built It
The owner of Quinta da Regaleira, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy man passionate about esotericism, alchemy, and symbolism, commissioned the construction of the estate, including the well.
The architect in charge was Luigi Manini. The estate, with all its gardens, tunnels, and decorative elements rich in symbolism, was built between 1904–1910.
Symbolism
The number 9 (levels) – linked to Dante’s Divine Comedy (the nine circles), stages of spiritual purification, etc.
Elements suggest Templar, Masonic, alchemical, and mystical influences.
The idea of a symbolic journey: descending into darkness (initiation, confrontation, introspection), followed by ascending toward the light.
Possible Uses
There are theories that the well was used for initiation rituals — possibly by members of secret societies.
Although there is no definitive documented proof of these rituals, visitors can experience the physical space and the symbolic atmosphere that evokes such practices.
