Residents and local leaders have raised concern over the increasing habit of selling nearly all harvested food, a trend they say is contributing to stunted growth and poor nutrition among families.
According to community health workers, many households prioritise selling their crops—such as maize, beans, bananas, and cassava—for quick income, leaving little or nothing for home consumption. This has resulted in children and adults lacking balanced diets, leading to malnutrition and slow growth rates.
Local leaders note that while selling produce is important for household income, communities must strike a balance to ensure enough food remains for daily meals. They are urging farmers to adopt proper food management practices, including keeping a portion of each harvest for family consumption before selling the rest.
Health officials warn that if the trend continues, cases of stunted growth and other nutrition-related conditions will keep rising, especially among children. They are calling for increased sensitisation on the importance of food security and proper nutrition in every household.
