Tamiya DT-03 Racing Fighter: Testing the GPM Racing Shock Upgrade!

Blue isn't (always) better! Here's an unboxing and test of a brand new set of aluminum GPM Racing Shocks - on the Tamiya DT-03 Racing Fighter 1/10 2WD Buggy RC Car ... versus the stock CVA shocks on the Tamiya DT-03 Neo Fighter Buggy.

The GPM Racing shocks tested and reviewed here where made for the TT-02B. But they where also marketed as suitable for the DT-03 at the dealer where I bought them. But are they really suitable?

Thank goodness I bought an extra set from 3Racing. Hopefully they will perform better?

The plan is actually to remove most of the DT-02 MS parts - and re-use these in another project. Already got some new parts from both Tamiya and more from GPM Racing. Hopefully it will turn out better than this dreadful start. But hopefully it will save somebody else, watching this video, from wasting money on these shocks when upgrading the DT-02 or DT-03.

Off camera, I did try to mess around with both oil and springs. The tricky part, I found, is that the front GPM shocks and springs are wider than the ones Tamiya use on their front shocks. And that left me with little choice of springs - as most of my spare parts, including my springs, are "Tamiya-size".

If anyone knows where one can buy other (softer, shorter) springs that are suitable for the GPM shocks in this video and the DT-03 set-up I would love to hear about it. In the meantime I will try out the other set from 3Racing.

To be fair to GPM, these shocks where made for the TT-02B, which is a heavier car. But the springs still seem quite hard, even for a TT-02B, I would suspect. Especially off road - where one actually would like a bit of movement in the suspension. They definitely are useless for the DT-02 and DT-03. Can't imagine why anyone would market them as suitable for these buggies. Having approximately the same length - doesn't mean that they actually do the job.

And no: I don't suspect that a battery in the car during the tests would make any real difference. Maybe a heavy old 6S 6000 mah NiMH might make a difference, but not a light modern 2S LiPo.
