An extra special July 4th, with a visit from CSX 1973, one of CSX's new heritage units
In 1960, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad gained a controlling interest in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. In 1967, both railroads gained joint control over the Western Maryland Railroad. The three railroads continued to operate as separate railroads.
In 1972, a holding company was created to start slowly merging the companies together. In 1973, the new holding company, named the Chessie System, acquired the three railroads.
In May of 2023, CSX released locomotive 1827, painted for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. This was the first of many heritage units to come. In June, CSX released the second heritage unit, number 1973 painted for the Chessie System.
