Copán is an archaeological site of the ancient Mayan civilization located in the department of Copán in western Honduras . From the 5th century to the 9th century it was the capital of an important kingdom of the Classic period . The city was located in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region , on the border with the Isthmus-Colombian cultural region , in an area inhabited by peoples who did not belong to the Mayan ethnic group . 1​ Today this fertile valley contains an urban center of around 3,000 inhabitants, a small airport and a winding road. 2

Human occupation of the site spans more than two millennia, from the Early Preclassic to the Postclassic . The city developed a distinctive sculptural style within the tradition of the lowland Maya, perhaps to highlight the Mayan origin of the city's rulers. 1

The city has a historical record that covers most of the classical period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. 1 Copan, originally probably called Oxwitik by the Mayans, 3 was a powerful city-state , ruling a vast kingdom in the southern Mayan region. 4​ The city suffered a major political disaster in 738 AD. C. , when Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil , one of the greatest kings in the history of the Copán dynasty, was captured and executed by his former vassal, the king of Quiriguá . 5 ​6 ​7​ This unexpected defeat led to a 17-year hiatus during which Copán may have been under the rule of Quiriguá. 8

A significant portion of the eastern side of the acropolis was affected by erosion caused by the Copan River , although the river was diverted in the 1930s in order to protect the site from further damage. 1​ In 1980 Copán was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
