In this video we travel from Prague to Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic to visit Sedlec Ossuary - better known as the "Bone Church."
Kutná Hora is known for the curiously creepy "Bone Church" or Ossuary (in Czech Kostnice). It is located in the suburb of Sedlec. The Ossuary is in the undergroud chapel of the Church of All Saints and contains the bones of about 40,000 people who died of the plague in 1318 and during the Hussite wars in the 15th century.
The bones were originally buried at the church cemetery, but when the cemetery was closed at the end of the 15th century, the exhumed bones were transferred to the chapel and compiled into pyramids. In 1870, František Rint of Česká Skalice arranged the bones and skulls into creative decorations that include bells, the Schwarzenberg coat-of-arms, and a the centerpiece of the macabre chamber - the chandelier.
Next, we travel down the road to visit The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist (Czech: Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie a svatého Jana Křtitele). This church is a Baroque Gothic church just a short walk from the Sedlec Ossuary and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most important Czech Gothic buildings built in the time of the last Přemyslids.
