The Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry, originally known as the Philadelphia Hospital for Mental Diseases, was opened in 1907. It would
remain in operation up until 1990 and was ultimately demolished in 2006. At its height, the facility housed over 7,000 patients in squalid, inhumane conditions. This is its story.
