The familiar tune "Adeste fideles" is the basis for this Christmas meditation. The tune is sung, of course, to the Christmas carol "O come, all ye faithful" and the choice of image to top and tail the video is the result of the refrain "Venite adoremus" - O come, let us adore him, the image being a picture of adoration in the church of the Holy Name, Manchester. The composer, William Foulkes (1863-1933) was born in Liverpool, where he spent the majority of his working life, notably as organist of St Margaret's Anfield, where he became organist in 1886, remaining in post until his death. He published over 500 works for organ, including this Postlude also recorded on this channel: • Alleluya - William Faulkes [Johannus LiVE ... . This edition is by Maurizio Machella
This recording was made on a Johannus Live III AGO organ, using the sample of the fine Hill organ in the church of the Holy Name, opposite the University of Manchester on Oxford Road, Manchester (the organ case is pictured at the beginning and end of the video). The sample sets can be heard from four positions: console, front of the church, centre of the church, rear of the church. This recording uses the rear of the church position, affording the most generous recording of the wonderful acoustic in this fine building.
