San Jose State volleyball plays amid torrent of anti-trans hate

Four women’s volleyball teams have forfeited matches against the San Jose State Spartans over the past month, and while none have said publicly that they refused to play because of a single athlete, many Republican politicians weighing in have been far less cryptic.
The Spartans became a national story after co-captain Brooke Slusser joined a lawsuit in September that is attempting to ban transgender women from NCAA women’s sports. In that lawsuit, Slusser outed one of her teammates as transgender.
The team's head coach Todd Kress said he and the athletes have been receiving hateful online messages for weeks, but added there had been no previous indication that this issue would become as intense as it has become.
