Carnarvon Gorge | Incredible Hike in Queensland: We Ran Out of Water!

In this video, we go on an incredible hike in Queensland's Carnarvon Gorge! Along the way, we run out of water and have to find some creative solutions to make it through the hike.

The first point of note is to make sure you have ample fuel in June. We took a campervan and thought with the Gorge only being 150klm away that we should be fine with a full tank of fuel.

We did not realise at that point with the low-speed dirt roads and the approx 100klm of driving around the gorge when we got there that we would almost run out of fuel because that added up to 400klm.

We stayed at The Big4 Breeze Holiday Park (previously Takarakka Bush Resort) for 4 nights, arriving late on day 1. We got familiar with our surroundings and did some small walks that arvo.

Day two We hiked all the way from the start of the park to the end and stayed at the big bend for the night. Just before dark we walked up to the top of the battleship spur. The second point of note is don't do this lol. Make sure you have enough time to get to the top of Battleship Spur and down with daylight. On the way down it got dark and we were walking in the dark over very dangerous slippery rocks which could have easily rolled an angle if we were not super careful.

The third point of note - you need to book the big bend before hiking to it. Luckily enough there was a tourist centre at the start to do it but the WIFI is horrendous, this is much more easily booked before coming to the park.

The fourth point of note - reception is almost non-existent. The place we stayed had some but it was unreliable and when we stayed the public phone did not even work so be prepared for no coverage.

The fifth point of note is - big Bend has rats. Make sure you secure all food hanging from a tree because if you do not they can eat right through your tent to get to the food. We saw this first-hand with someone.

The sixth point of note - take at least 5 litres of water for each person. We took 6 litres in total and we ran out! Luckily for us, we met someone that had a water filter and we were able to take water from the gorge they filtered it for us because the gorge water as it is should not be drank due to waterborne viruses in it.

On the third day, we used to trek back and do all of the offshoots. This basically became the scenic walk but tonne honest we carried far too much weight-wise (almost 15-16kg each) and we really wore ourselves out. I recommend knowing your body can walk 12-15 klm a day or just doing a day walk in and out because you cannot camp halfway.

Even though we made some mistakes and had some hiccups along the way this was so worth it! This place has a natural beauty about it which is hard to even describe to you. It is definitely a bucket list for all hiking enthusiasts. I recommend a really cool way to top it off to do the helicopter flight. They do not fly directly over the same gorge that you walk for health and safety reasons but the path they take you on is breathtaking nonetheless.
