Opera Lab Berlin transforms Karlheinz Stockhausen's concert piece STIMMUNG for six-part a cappella overtone singing - a classic of recent music history - into music dance theater. The one-hour meditative, harmony-seeking and above-earth appealing overtone singing in STIMMUNG breathes the spirit of the seventies. The piece's esotericism unfolded an artistic counterpart to capitalist rationalism, to the western way of life and to the bourgeois concert ritual. Under the direction of the dancer and choreographer Margaux Marielle-Tréhoüart, singers of the ensemble will expand the performance into dance and theatre. The choreographic staging by STIMMUNG not only translates vocal events into spatial and physical processes, but also enables a substantive examination of Stockhausen's sounding social utopia. In the light of a current examination of the metaphysical, Opera Lab Berlin interprets STIMMUNG in an unusual and unprecedented way.

New Age and Hippie movement are now seamlessly integrated into commercial popular culture. Alternative forms of performance are the standard of the event society. Spiritualism is a commodity like any other. The scenic-choreographic interpretation of STIMMUNG therefore raises the question of a contemporary relationship to the metaphysical and presents a community of dancing singers who seek out the meaning of life with the audience: STIMMUNG unfolds a dance and music theater liturgy of tragicomic encounters with the last things. In the interplay of isolation and collectivity, the desperately hoping conjure up artificial and real paradises in the midst of metaphysical homelessness. In the former church room of Ballhaus Ost, STIMMUNG becomes as much God's funeral mass as it is to try to revive his remains spiritually.
