Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti is a narrative poem composed in April 1859 and was published in 1862. The poem tells the story of Laura and Lizzie who are tempted with fruit by goblin merchants. Rossetti's poem challenges traditional ideas about women's desires and roles. She may have written the poem to question social norms, especially how women were expected to behave. Women in the Victorian era were expected to be virtuous and proper, and Rossetti's poem might have aimed to challenge these expectations. The poem has two sections with different stories. In the first section, goblins sell tempting fruit that Laura eats, making her sick. In the second section, Lizzie tries to help Laura by buying fruit from the goblins and giving it to her.
