A leisurely stroll around the remains of Berkhamsted’s Norman Motte and Bailey Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval history, set against a backdrop of tranquil greenery.
As you wander the grassy banks of the motte, the raised mound where the keep once stood, it’s easy to imagine the stronghold towering over the surrounding landscape centuries ago. The gentle curves of the bailey encircle the site, once bustling with life when the castle served as a key strategic outpost.
Today, the ancient earthworks and fragments of flint and stone walls whisper stories of past sieges and royal visits, including William the Conqueror’s historic claim to the English throne. The peaceful atmosphere, punctuated by birdsong and rustling leaves, transforms the castle’s ruins into a serene retreat, inviting visitors to reflect on the deep history embedded within Berkhamsted’s landscape.
