In this interview, Anand Satheesh, author of “Emerson For The Digital Generation” asks Prof. Barbara Oakley, founder of the most acclaimed MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) course
“Learning How To Learn” at Coursera.org, Why is Self-Directed learning important?
Prof. Oakley says “Self-Directed learning is the way you can be the best learner. A self-Directed learner doesn’t just follow his or her passions, (s)he is good at connecting things.”
From here, this discussion takes an interesting twist. Prof. Oakley indirectly connects self-directed learning with Creativity. Creative people hear something in one place and use it in another place to solve their problems.
Anand share his experience in Creativity from his father’s interview with Dr.A.K. Pradeep, founder of the neuro-marketing company NeuroFocus for the film Innovation: Where Creativity and Technology Meet (www.innovationmovie.com).
Dr.A.K. Pradeep was puzzled with a question on marketing from one of his clients. On his way back to San Francisco, he had a conversation with the passenger sitting next to him.
This man was a researcher of attention deficiency in children. Dr. Pradeep got the answer for his client’s question on how to get maximum return from huge money spend on marketing. Rest is history.
Dr. A.K. Pradeep stated the Neuro marketing company NeuroFocus with this idea.
Dr.A.K. Pradeep’s experience in his own words.

Prof. Oakley shares her thoughts on how to become an expert in anything.
She was a Russian linguist before becoming a professor of Math and Engineering.
She was able to use the same ideas what she used to become good at Russian language to learn Math and Science.
Prof. Oakley adds “you should do something completely unrelated to bring new ideas into what you are doing.”
Anand brings the story of Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry.
He says “The idea of chemical balancing came from Lavoisier’s experience as an accountant.
