In this interview, Anand Satheesh, author of “Emerson For The Digital Generation” asks Prof. Barbara Oakley, founder of the most acclaimed MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) course
“Learning How To Learn” at Coursera.org, Why is Self-Directed learning important?

Prof. Oakley says “Self-Directed learning is the way you can be the best learner. A self-Directed learner doesn’t just follow his or her passions, (s)he is good at connecting things.”

Prof. Oakley shares her thoughts on how to become an expert in anything.

She was a Russian linguist before becoming a professor of Math and Engineering.

She was able to use the same ideas what she used to become good at Russian language to learn Math and Science.
Prof. Oakley adds “you should do something completely unrelated to bring new ideas into what you are doing.”

Anand brings the story of Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry.
