হুগলির কেষ্টপুরের বিখ্যাত মাছের মেলা // ৫০০ বছরের ইতিহাস // Mach mela Hooghly

হুগলি জেলার দেবানন্দপুর–ব্যান্ডেল এলাকার কেষ্টপুর গ্রামে প্রতি বছর পয়লা মাঘ উপলক্ষে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ঐতিহ্যবাহী কেষ্টপুরের মাছের মেলা। প্রায় ৫০০ বছরেরও বেশি পুরনো এই মেলাটি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের অন্যতম প্রাচীন ও জনপ্রিয় আঞ্চলিক মাছের মেলা হিসেবে পরিচিত।
লোককথা ও ঐতিহাসিক সূত্র অনুযায়ী, এই মেলার সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে শ্রীচৈতন্য মহাপ্রভুর শিষ্য রঘুনাথ দাস গোস্বামীর নাম। তাঁর গৃহপ্রত্যাবর্তনের আনন্দ উপলক্ষে গ্রামবাসীদের আপ্যায়নের জন্য মাছের আয়োজন থেকেই এই মাছের মেলার প্রথার সূচনা বলে মনে করা হয়। আজও সেই ঐতিহ্য অক্ষুণ্ণ রয়েছে।
এই মেলায় চুনোপুঁটি, রুই, কাতলা, মৃগেল, চিতল, বোয়াল, ইলিশ, ভেটকি, চিংড়ি ও কাঁকড়া সহ বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির দেশি ও সামুদ্রিক মাছ বিক্রি হয়। অনেক সময় ৪০–৫০ কেজি বা তারও বেশি ওজনের বিশাল আকৃতির মাছ মেলার প্রধান আকর্ষণ হয়ে ওঠে।
হুগলি জেলার পাশাপাশি হাওড়া, নদিয়া, বর্ধমান ও উত্তর ২৪ পরগনা-সহ আশপাশের বিভিন্ন জেলা থেকে হাজার হাজার মানুষ এই দিনে কেষ্টপুরে ভিড় করেন। মাছ কেনার পাশাপাশি অনেকে পাশের আমবাগান ও খোলা জায়গায় মাছ ভেজে খাওয়ার আনন্দও উপভোগ করেন।

The Kestopur Fish Fair of Hooghly district is one of the oldest traditional fish fairs in West Bengal, held every year on the first day of Magh (Paush Sankranti) at Kestopur village in the Debanandapur–Bandel area of Hooghly. With a history of over 500 years, this heritage fair represents the rich cultural and rural traditions of Bengal.
According to historical records and local folklore, the origin of the Kestopur Machh Mela is linked to Raghunath Das Goswami, a close disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The fair is believed to have started as a community celebration to welcome his return home and later evolved into an annual fish festival that continues to this day.
At the Kestopur Fish Fair, a wide variety of freshwater and marine fish are sold, including Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Chital, Boal, Hilsa, Bhetki, prawns, and crabs. One of the biggest attractions of this fish mela is the display of giant fishes weighing 40–50 kg or more, drawing thousands of visitors and fish lovers every year.
People from Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman, North 24 Parganas, and surrounding districts visit this fair to buy fish and experience Bengal’s traditional rural lifestyle. Visitors also enjoy the unique local tradition of frying and eating fish in nearby mango orchards, which adds to the festive charm of the mela.
