Parturition
Parturition is the process of childbirth, in which the fully developed baby (foetus) is delivered from the mother’s uterus.
It usually occurs after 9 months of pregnancy (≈ 280 days).
Stages of Parturition 🧠🤰
Parturition occurs in 3 main stages:
1. Dilation Stage 🔓
Cervix (mouth of uterus) softens and widens
Uterus starts strong rhythmic contractions
Cervix dilates up to 10 cm
🕒 Longest stage of labor
2. Expulsion Stage 👶
Fully dilated cervix
Strong uterine contractions push the baby out
Baby comes out through the birth canal (vagina)
🎉 Baby is born in this stage
3. Placental Stage 🧬
After baby’s birth
Placenta and foetal membranes are expelled
Also called afterbirth
🩸 Prevents infection and bleeding
Hormonal Control of Parturition 🧪
Oxytocin hormone plays a major role
Released from pituitary gland
Increases uterine contractions
➡️ More contractions → more oxytocin (positive feedback)
