(2 Sep 1970) RR7035B NORWAY: JOSTEDALS GLACIER EXPEDITION
In August 1970 six British parachutists - all members of a scientific team - completed a remarkable and dangerous expedition to Europe's biggest glacier, the Jostedals, in Norway. The team, led by Army captain Sir Ranulph Fiennes, made a free-fall parachute drop on to the top of the 7,000 foot glacier - the first time such a feat has been attempted - and carried out the first survey of the glacier. The information gained may help to prove or disprove a new Danish theory that a second Ice Age is already under way. After the survey work, the team trekked 40 kilometres across the glacier, following an old Viking trade route, made a perilous descent of a 2,000 foot ice-cliff to the Leon Lake, and finally achieved another "first" by successfully negotiating the rapids of the fast-flowing Briksdalen River. A Roving Report camera team went with them to record their progress.
