It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and the experts at Beaufort Memorial are stressing the importance of early detection. We caught up with board-certified, fellowship trained medical oncologist Dr. Eric Turner and nurse practitioner Katy Jones who see patients at Beaufort Memorial Oncology Specialists in Beaufort.
We also learned the risk factors for those considered to be at high risk for breast cancer, like age, family history, dense breasts and inherited gene mutations. Others that are related to lifestyle include being overweight, physically inactive, drinking alcohol/smoking, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement after menopause.
According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year survival rate from breast cancer is 99% if detected early and in the localized stage.
So, who should be getting mammograms? According to Dr. Turner, women aged 40 and older and at average risk for breast cancer and women younger than 40 with certain risk factors such as family history, genetic mutations or dense breasts.
During the month of October, Beaufort Memorial is offering screening mammograms for just $99.
To learn all the ways that Beaufort Memorial is helping to catch breast cancer early and tailor the treatments to each patient, we hope you enjoy our interview.
