Hi everyone! Welcome to the start of my Greece series. In this episode, I explore the historic and vibrant capital city of Greece — Athens. This was actually my second visit; my first was back in 2008. I can’t believe that was 17 years ago!
Join me for a relaxed stroll around this iconic city during the so-called 'off-season' — a place many consider the birthplace of democracy.
Greece holds a special place in my heart. In many ways, it's the country that inspired me to travel the world. But I won’t spoil the emotional "why" just yet — find out later in the vlog!
We begin in the lively Monastiraki area, where you can enjoy a magnificent (and free!) view of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. I explain that the plan is to take it slow and explore without an agenda — in fact, getting lost is encouraged!
As I walk toward the Acropolis, we pass several ancient sites including Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora. Along the way, I share some key facts about Athens — including population figures — while browsing souvenir shops and sampling a sweet treat from a local street vendor.
Continuing on, I discuss Athens as the host of the 2004 Summer Olympics, and more significantly, its role as the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. I touch on challenges the city faced (yes, including a bid from Cape Town!) and how the Olympics impacted Athens in terms of infrastructure.
As we walk beside the Acropolis, I point out more ancient ruins and churches, and I share the mythological story of how Athens got its name — spoiler: it involves Athena and Poseidon!
Next, I head to the iconic Plaka neighborhood, known for its charming restaurants, shops, and narrow alleys. Here, I reflect on aspects of Greek daily life and the values that many Athenians and Greeks embrace. I also touch on the challenges Greece faced following the Global Financial Crisis and its own Sovereign Debt Crisis in 2009.
After Plaka, I venture into a more random part of the city to capture everyday life — from local flora and traffic to street culture. I visit Cathedral Square, then walk toward Syntagma (where the Greek parliament is), passing a major shopping district and tasting a local favorite from a local stall: the sesame-covered bread ring known as koulouri.
With renewed energy, I arrive at Syntagma Square, pass the Hellenic Parliament, and explore the beautiful National Garden behind it. As I return to the city center, I witness the Changing of the Guard — an unplanned but unforgettable moment — and then visit Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. I wrap up this part of the day by sampling Greek coffee at a popular local chain, Coffee Island.
In the final segment, I walk back to my hotel from Monastiraki through less touristy neighborhoods, passing colorful murals and street art that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of Athenians. Back at the hotel, I give a quick room tour and wrap up the vlog.
I hope you enjoy this tour of Athens! If you haven’t yet, please hit LIKE and SUBSCRIBE, and don’t forget to leave a COMMENT — I love hearing your thoughts. Feel free to share this video with friends and family to help spread the word about my channel.
Happy exploring!
Willie
