We were at Camp Adazi in Latvia to visit the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Battle Group that was participating in Exercise Silver Arrow 2024, which served as the NATO Combat Readiness Evaluation (CREVAL).
The exercise was orchestrated from the Exercise Control (ExCon) facility at Camp Adazi, which is staffed with personnel from the Canadian Army’s centre of excellence for collective training, the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre (CMTC).
CMTC provides the framework for validation that enables units to demonstrate their readiness and effectiveness either at home or abroad. CMTC employs experienced and dedicated professionals, capable of enhancing collective training events at every stage - from design to execution, to the after-action review process. Adjudication of the exercise in the field was carried out by Observer-Controller-Trainers (OCT).
In this video we visit with the CMTC Exercise Director for Silver Arrow 2024.
For context, the area around Camp Adazi is less than 250 kilometers from the border between Latvia and Russia.
Exercise Silver Arrow was incorporated as part of the Latvian Exercise Namejs, a national defence exercise which is meant to integrate systems and processes, and also build relationships with NATO partners.
Exercise Silver Arrow challenged the battlegroup to react to a variety of realistic and complex training scenarios. The multi-national nature of the battlegroup was clear, with each nation providing troops and equipment in support of a common goal: to defend and deter the territory of Latvia against the actions of an invading enemy force.
Exercise Silver Arrow 2024 involved personnel from all the nations contributing forces to the Battle Group: Canada, as the framework nation, Italy, Poland, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Denmark, and Spain. During the exercise, Danish soldiers acted as an attack force, which in military parlance is called the "OPFOR" (Opposing Force).
Our thanks to the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC), the Canadian Army, and members of CMTC for their assistance.
