Jul 20, 2025: Drone Flight over the Erupting Volcano in Iceland (with NatureEye)

A volcanic eruption began near Grindavík, Iceland, on July 16, 2025, along the Sundhnúkur crater row. It followed an early morning earthquake swarm and opened a fissure up to 1,000 meters long, with a smaller fissure appearing later. This is the twelfth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021 and part of a larger volcanic cycle that began in 2019.

Lava fountains and flows were visible, mostly moving southeast through uninhabited land. Authorities evacuated Grindavík, local campsites, and the Blue Lagoon spa. No injuries or major damage occurred, and flights continued as normal. Gas emissions and volcanic glass fibers affected air quality, prompting health warnings. Scientists continue to monitor the area for possible further activity.
