This is the twenty first episode of Education Unpacked, a YouTube series by the Centre for Civil Society. The videos in this series were originally recorded in 2018 and are being relaunched by popular demand to support wider knowledge dissemination.
This Episode talks about:
-Extent of Private Education
-Primary Education: Classes 1 to 5
-Upper Primary: Classes 6 to 8
Extent of Private Schools (Data Sources):
-NSS (National Sample Survey): One of the most credible household surveys. It collects data across districts in India. Although it is a sample survey (about 6 lakh individuals), it is representative of the country.
-ASER (Annual Status of Education Report): Another important source of data.
-DISE (District Information System for Education): Collects information at the district level. SCERTs typically collate and compile this data before sharing it with NUEPA. All parliamentary questions and answers on schooling are usually based on DISE data.
-In 2014–2015, about 30% of children were studying in private unaided schools.
-Many parents do not know the difference between aided and unaided schools.
-Aided private schools differ fundamentally from unaided private schools.
The government has liberalized the availability of this data.
