Let us bring out the combat potential of our Hung Gar Kung Fu system. Everyone knows that we move our arm over large angles. This engages a large part of the upper body's muscle groups, and allows a lot of space for acceleration of strikes to the opponent.
By throwing punches like how you do it in the forms, from the 'hands to hips, shoulders down and drawn back' stances, you are engaging:
1) Pecs (Chest)
2) Lats (Wing)
3) Serratus Anterior (Jagged muscles on ribcage)
4) Trapezius (Shoulders)
all these muscles on top of the deltoids and triceps which conservative Kung Fu and other traditional martial artists use when they stick to a 'guard up' stance as a platform to deliver their techniques from.
It's naive to think that sacrificing hitting power for a guard that looks like it has less opening, and having hands closer to the front, can give you the absolute edge in a fight. People realize it's naive to drop their hitting power when they've actually experienced getting hit in fighting or sparring before. It IS about how hard you hit.
